Viktoria lives in a family with many children. She has got three more siblings, three younger sisters. The house where they all live does not belong to the family. Indeed, the house is very old and made from clay. There is no gas or water. The children’s father has a disability. Victoria’s mother has to travel 15 kilometers to get to work. Victoria’s mother has been an orphan since her childhood.
The three youngest children have to walk every day to the main road for 3 miles. On the main road, they are trying to hitchhike to get to their school (hitchhiking is common in rural Ukraine). The school is located in a district center. They have to go by car 7 kilometers to get there. Since the beginning of the war with Russia, the school in the village has not opened because of the lack of a bomb shelter. After finishing the 9th grade, Victoria got into pharmacy college. It is quite a long way to travel from home to her college. Victoria’s
college is located 100 kilometers away from home.  In addition to that Victoria has to pay for her college and also for the college’s dormitory. These fees are approximately $150 per month but Victoria’s family puts great value into her education, they want to get out of the poverty cycle.  The average monthly family income is $250.This includes the mother’s salary and father’s pension. Victoria, like all girls her age, wants to wear nicer clothes and shoes. There is a lack of funds to survive because of the war.
